Hey all! I carved out an ocarina over the last week, out of a poplar log. But the sound is very weak. If I blow harder there is no sound. At the moment the two halves are not glued together. Once I glue them it will be so much harder to work on the fipple, so I thought I'd ask here first.

Any advice would be welcome! I already made one before, but it was an all round failure.

It is difficult to say what is wrong. The voicing looks really rough. Try to make it more regular in shape. Also, make sure the labium splits the air stream neatly: angle of the windway and the height of the labium are crucial here.

If the air is split correctly, then try making the voicing longer
