I really do need help with determining reasons for the effect that shape has on the ocarina's fingerhole placement. The lower example plays well for the first 6 holes. Opening next two holes only raises the pitch only slightly. But the right thumb hole make drastically higher a pitch.

Yes I remember reading that fingerholes can be placed almost anywhere, but try not to place the thumb holes too close to the window.....but this trial has me stumped. The left hand's fingerholes are located on a shape that is usually the "large area" of the globe. this example's "glove is a rectangular shape, a shape that works well on a longitudinal closed tubular shape. Why moving the windway makes such a difference?

The main things that I have found with finger hole placement is that you can't put a hole in too constricted an area or the pitch will not raise enough no matter the size of the hole. I also don't like to put the thumb holes too close to the voicing as well. I've just found better results by not having the holes to close to the voicing and also keeping it away from the direction of airflow from the windway. (basically don't put the thumb holes behind the voicing in the direction it is pointing.

That last part is just something I have noticed with ocarinas but it is done on tubular instruments without a problem. I think it is because with a tubular instrument their is enough length to place the thumb hole farther away from the voicing but the ocarina does not have this vertical length.
